Democrats and Republicans in the House narrowly passed a $1.2 trillion spending package Friday to fund a majority of the government for the rest of the fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30. The vote follows months of turmoil and blockades driven by conservative Republicans’ disagreements over immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border.

For procedural reasons, the bill required the backing of two-thirds of those voting: 280 votes since there are three vacancies and 12 lawmakers did not vote. It passed 286 to 134.

Notably, a majority of Republicans present and voting opted against the measure.

This bill funds roughly three-quarters of the federal government, including the departments of Defense, State and Homeland Security, as well as the IRS and Transportation Security Administration. Congress has already passed separate legislation funding the remaining portion. To avert a partial government shutdown, the Senate needs to pass the bill and send it to President Biden for his signature before Saturday.
